BREAKING NEWS: European Commission publishes proposal for the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018

Brussels / The Hague, 30 August 2016 – In time for the political rentrée in September, the European Commission has today published its long-awaited proposal for the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018. After the initial announcement by EU Commissioner Tibor Navracsics in April 2016, the Commission’s detailed proposal now sets the framework in which the European Year will take place. It sends a strong signal to both citizens and policy-makers that cultural heritage matters for Europe and is at the heart of what connects peoples, cities, regions and countries in Europe.

Grand Prix winners of the European Heritage Awards

Madrid, 24 May 2016 – The winners of the 2016 EU Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards, Europe’s top honour in the field, were celebrated this evening during a high-profile event at the Zarzuela Theatre in Madrid. Maestro Plácido Domingo, President of Europa Nostra, the leading heritage organisation in Europe, and Tibor Navracsics, European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport, co-hosted the European Heritage Awards Ceremony and presented the 7 Grand Prix and the Public Choice Award, chosen from among the 28 winning projects of this year.

The 7 Grand Prix laureates, selected by independent expert juries and entitled to receive €10,000 each, are:

Venice Lagoon: THE Most Endangered Site in Europe

Europa Nostra, through the voice of its President, Maestro Plácido Domingo, has urged the international community and the authorities at all levels to join forces to save the Venice Lagoon which is seriously endangered by climate change and by various forms of unsuitable (tourism) development. Plácido Domingo made this appeal in a video message (Italian and English) broadcast at a public event held on 16 March in Venice by Europa Nostra and the European Investment Bank Institute. Europe’s 7 Most Endangered Heritage Sites 2016 announced

The Hague / Luxembourg, 16 March 2016 – The Archaeological site of Ererouyk and the village of Ani Pemza in Armenia, Patarei Sea Fortress in Tallinn in Estonia, Helsinki-Malmi Airport in Finland, Colbert Swing Bridge in Dieppe in France, the Kampos of Chios in Greece, the Convent of St. Anthony of Padua in Extremadura in Spain, and the Ancient city of Hasankeyf and its surroundings in Turkey have been named as the 7 Most Endangered heritage sites in Europe in 2016. Europa Nostra, the leading European heritage organisation, and the European Investment Bank Institute (EIBI) made the announcement today during a public event at the Ateneo Veneto in Venice, Italy.
